Medals & Awards

My wines regularly receive top honors and recognition for quality at numerous competitions and from many esteemed wine writers. I have a personal preference for wine competitions and publications that do double blind panel judgings, as these are truly objective indications of quality.

Most of the better known wine writers do not adhere to such rigorous standards, and thus their opinions, though often valuable and very perceptive, should be viewed as just that. While they are wine writers, they are not journalists, as they do not adhere to principles of objectivity, and generally seem unconcerned with practices that obviously invite speculation of influence and conflicts of interest. Thus, in my experience, personal connections, sensory distraction, perceptions of “pedigree”, and other biases and influences can and do result in “ratings” that will not withstand objective scrutiny.

That said, we do submit many of our wines to the major publications for review, and I appreciate very much their role they play in informing the public about our wines, winery and industry.

What I suggest is that you can best use this information by not allowing yourself to be swayed by any one wine “score”. Instead, you should seek out wineries and winemakers who consistently achieve recognition from a variety of raters and competitions – including some that involve objective judging. Read the wine writers, not to collect scores, but to hear what they have to tell you about the wine and winemaker’s style and flavor profiles, so as to guide you to wines that you might enjoy. And then let your own palate be the judge as to the quality of a specific wine. Ultimately it is only your score that matters.
